Air Volleyball, a dynamic and approachable adaptation of the sport, is rapidly gaining popularity, especially in China. Its appeal spans all age groups, serving as an exciting entry point into volleyball and encouraging greater youth participation.
This innovative version features a lighter, softer, and slightly larger ball, promoting extended rallies, increased player interaction, and enhanced enjoyment. Coupled with a lower net and a compact court size, Air Volleyball can be easily set up and played in diverse locations, from local community centers to vibrant shopping malls.
During their visit to Ningbo for the Men’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals 2025, the FIVB delegation, spearheaded by President Fabio Azevedo, witnessed firsthand the immense appeal of Air Volleyball in China. They participated in an engaging demonstration match alongside local players, a session filled with smiles, laughter, and thrilling extended rallies that captivated the audience.
President Azevedo shared his enthusiasm with Xinhua news agency, stating, “It’s truly remarkable and fantastic; Air Volleyball presents an ideal starting point for children to engage with the sport.” He elaborated on its benefits: “The ball is light and harmless, and the gameplay is incredibly straightforward. This design fosters widespread participation and brings immense joy to players of all ages.”
He urged, “Continue playing, continue enjoying the game. Volleyball inherently unites people; it’s fundamentally about togetherness. Our aim is to encourage even more individuals to participate and become involved in volleyball.”
Beyond being merely a recreational activity, Air Volleyball perfectly embodies the FIVB`s Strategic Vision 2032, particularly its core tenet of promoting widespread participation in sports. By enhancing the accessibility, affordability, and comprehensibility of volleyball for a broader audience, Air Volleyball is instrumental in expanding the sport’s global reach, one engaging rally at a time.
