Andrej Jokanovic experienced a summer of relentless activity and rapid advancement. The 17-year-old French outside hitter played a pivotal role in his team`s triumph at the Boys` U19 World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His exceptional attacking prowess and calm demeanor were recognized with both the Most Valuable Player and Best Outside Hitter awards for the tournament.
Scarcely had the celebrations concluded when Jokanovic received another call-up. Within days, he transitioned from competing against his peers to challenging older adversaries as part of France`s U21 squad. This swift transition allowed little room for respite.
“Initially, it was quite challenging due to the minimal break – perhaps one or two weeks – between the two tournaments,” Jokanovic explained. “I joined the U21 group just two days after the final, making it difficult to recover both physically and mentally, and to integrate into a new, unfamiliar team. I collaborated closely with the physical trainer to regain peak condition, and I believe we achieved significant progress within those fifteen days.”
Despite the demanding schedule, he has unequivocally proven his worth. Jokanovic confidently integrated into the U21 team, adapting to the higher pace and continuously learning from each outing. Though the competition intensified, he approaches every match as an invaluable opportunity for growth.
“This is a new tier, a fresh experience that I`m still exploring with every game,” he remarked. “My focus is on contributing my utmost to the team. Even with the elevated level and increased difficulty, I remain committed to performing my best.”
This rapid ascent has also transformed his life off the court. Following his return from Uzbekistan, Jokanovic enjoyed only a fleeting moment at home before new commitments plunged him back into travel and rigorous preparation.
“I returned to my home in Cannes, France, and managed to meet with a couple of friends,” he recounted. “Subsequently, I had to travel to Paris to handle administrative procedures for my upcoming move to the United States next year. I had just a single day to unwind with friends, attempting to disconnect from volleyball, but it proved quite challenging. Even after a mere two-day break, I was eager to get back to volleyball; it’s my sport, and I absolutely adore it.”
The administrative visit to Paris wasn`t merely routine paperwork; it marked the prelude to his next major chapter. Jokanovic is set to embark on a journey across the Atlantic in 2026, where he will play collegiate volleyball at UC Irvine, a program renowned for its international connections and a legacy of French players.
“I`m heading to UC Irvine next year,” he confirmed. “Hilir Henno, a French player who completed his studies this year, provided immense assistance throughout this process. We navigated everything together, and I finalized the administrative tasks in Paris afterward.”
This upcoming move fills him with excitement, particularly after encountering future teammates during the U21 tournament.
“It promises to be an incredible experience,” Jokanovic stated. “Here at the U21s, there are already players from Canada and the USA who also play for UC Irvine. I`ve begun discussing their experiences with them, and it’s truly encouraging. I`m genuinely thrilled about this prospect.”
Currently, however, his focus is steadfastly on France’s U21 campaign. With several regular starters absent, the team faces both challenges and opportunities, and Jokanovic perceives his role as crucial.
“My objective, naturally, is to exert myself and play with maximum effort,” he affirmed. “I believe that if I perform well, I can effectively fill their shoes and contribute significantly to this team.”
It has been an unparalleled summer – one that commenced with MVP accolades at the U19s and seamlessly transitioned into the U21 championship, all while the prospect of California looms large. The intensity has been unyielding, but the potential is undeniable. France possesses a rising young star who is not merely keeping pace but forging ahead.
