Broadway Musical 'Six' to Close in January 2027

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Six, which reimagines the stories of Henry VIII's wives from their own perspectives using contemporary pop music, will close on January 3, 2027. The production will have completed nearly six years and 2,178 performances by its closing date.

Producers Kenny Wax, Wendy & Andy Barnes, George Stiles, and Kevin McCollum announced the closure. The musical, penned by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss and co-directed by Moss and Jamie Armitage with choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, was the first new Broadway musical to debut after the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown. Commencing previews on September 17, 2021, and opening night on October 3, 2021, Six has become the longest-running show at the Lena Horne Theatre (formerly the Brooks Atkinson Theatre).

Six, with an initial capitalization of $5 million, recouped its investment by December 2021. This rapid return was attributed to its relatively low initial cost, moderate weekly operating expenses (estimated at approximately $469,000), and strong audience reception for its critically acclaimed, lively, and well-executed musical featuring engaging songs and a clever concept.

Despite its initial success, the show's box office performance has seen a decline in recent months. For the week ending August 23, it grossed $463,638, a significant drop from its peak of over $600,000-$700,000 the previous year. During that August week, attendance was only at 60% of the Lena Horne Theatre's capacity.

Following its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, Six opened in London's West End in January 2019. It then began Broadway performances in February 2020 but was interrupted by the shutdown. The musical resumed performances at the then-Atkinson Theatre in the fall of 2021.

The London production remains open, as do the U.S., UK, and Australian tours. The show has also completed runs in numerous international cities. Six is scheduled to return to China for a 12-week tour later this year, and a new Spanish-language production will open in Madrid in September.

A filmed version, Six The Musical Live!, recorded with the original West End cast, was released in the UK and Ireland last April and in the United States and Canada on August 14.

The current Broadway cast includes Khaila Wilcoxon as Catherine of Aragon, Chloe Tucker Caine as Anne Boleyn, Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour, Olivia Donalson as Anna of Cleves, Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard, and Stephanie Jae Park as Catherine Parr.

The original Broadway cast recording, released in 2022, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album. The Broadway production garnered eight 2022 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and secured wins for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design/Musical.
