August 20, 2026Carlos Mendoza3 мин

VERONA - The Italian Men's National Volleyball Team concluded its training camp in Verona today. The camp, which began on August 14th, is part of the team's preparation for the upcoming Men's European Championships, set to commence on September 10th with an inaugural match against Sweden in Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples.

Under the captaincy of Simone Giannelli and guidance of head coach Ferdinando De Giorgi, the "Azzurri" engaged in intensive training sessions at Pala Magis, balancing on-court drills with weight room workouts. The previous day, the venue welcomed over 2,000 spectators for an open training session. Prior to the Verona camp, the team held a four-day training period in Cervia from August 10th to 13th.

Following this preparatory phase in Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, the Italian squad will continue their journey towards the continental championship by participating in the FIPAV Cup Men Elite. This four-team tournament will feature Italy facing Germany, Cuba, and Brazil, with matches scheduled in Reggio Calabria from August 26th to 27th and in Messina from August 28th to 31st. Italy's matches in this tournament will be broadcast on Rai Sport and Sky Sport.

Yuri Romanò's Thoughts

"The work is progressing very well, with an increasing intensity in our program. Our physical condition has generally improved. In Cervia, during the initial days of the camp, we focused heavily on physical conditioning, and here in Verona, with the weight training, we are pushing hard. We are also developing better team chemistry on the court through our daily technical work. Therefore, I'd say the progress so far has been positive. Yesterday, during the open training session, there were so many people, and it was wonderful. It was also great to stop afterward for photos, sign autographs, and feel the fans' affection. This warmth is very important for us heading into the European Championship, and we hope this support will be present at every venue. This open training session gave us a taste of what's to come. On September 10th, we have our opening match in Piazza del Plebiscito. I've thought about it, and it will certainly be very special to play outdoors, and likely quite challenging in certain aspects, but it will be for both teams. However, I imagine the emotion will be immense, just entering the court with that atmosphere and full stands. We are eagerly anticipating that match. Before that, however, we have friendly matches in Reggio Calabria and Messina, which will be very important for us as they are our final real test matches before the games that truly count. We will play without excessive pressure or anxiety, but we must make the most of these tests, where we will be seeking important answers. We will be very focused in these pre-European Championship matches."
