Leeds Rhinos Return to Super League Summit After Dominating St Helens

Leeds Rhinos have ascended back to the pinnacle of the Betfred Super League, securing a commanding 34-6 victory against St Helens on Friday night. This decisive performance at the Brewdog Stadium not only ended Saints' recent positive streak but also significantly jeopardized their playoff aspirations, leaving them outside the top six with just two games remaining in the season.

The Rhinos established an early advantage through Chris Hankinson, and a swift brace of tries from Cameron Smith and Harry Newman in the latter stages of the first half solidified their control over the match. Additional tries from Ryan Hall, Ash Handley, and Brodie Croft, coupled with five successful conversions by Jake Connor, capped off a comprehensive win for Leeds. This victory served as a powerful response after their previous defeat to champions Hull KR at the hands of Wigan.

From the outset, Leeds dictated the tempo of the game, frustrating St Helens, who had seen a revival under interim coach Eamon O'Carroll, aiming to break into the top six.

Leeds' early pressure yielded results in the seventh minute when Connor's expertly timed pass set up Hankinson for the opening try. While Cooper Jenkins appeared to extend Leeds' lead shortly after, the try was disallowed due to a knock-on in the build-up.

St Helens gradually found their rhythm, but Deon Cross was twice denied on the wing, first by a robust Leeds defense and then by a forward pass ruling on a pass from Tristan Sailor. The hosts were then reduced to 12 men when Daniel Suluka-Fifita was sent to the sin bin for a late tackle on Presley Cassell, who was briefly taken off for a head injury assessment but passed it.

Leeds pressed again, with Jack Bird coming close to grounding the ball before Smith broke through the defense for an impressive solo try. The visitors added their third try just before halftime, with Newman finishing off a sweeping attacking move in the corner.

Leeds thought they had extended their lead further early in the second half when Tom Holroyd crossed the try line, but the video referee deemed the ball not grounded. However, the respite for Saints was short-lived as Jack Bird's skillful flick pass released Ryan Hall, who slid over for a try.

St Helens managed to register a try through Jack Welsby, who broke clear from a Jonny Lomax pass and evaded a tackle from Lachie Miller to score, with Sailor adding the conversion. However, Leeds quickly reasserted their dominance.

Jake Connor played a pivotal role in creating two further tries. He executed a delicate grubber kick for Ash Handley to score, and then deliberately kicked the ball against the post for Brodie Croft to gather and touch down. Connor converted both tries but missed the opportunity to add to his tally from a late penalty, hitting the post.

Huddersfield Secures Crucial Victory Against Play-off Contenders Leigh

In a vital match at the lower end of the table, Huddersfield secured a significant 30-18 victory over Leigh. Cole Geyer scored twice as the Giants crossed for five tries, propelling them to 14 points and above second-bottom York.

Leigh took an early lead in the 10th minute with a try from Owen Trout, converted by Adam Cook. However, Huddersfield responded with a try from Harry Rushton, and Taane Milne's score gave them a 14-6 lead at halftime.

Niall Evalds extended Huddersfield's lead after the restart, but an end-to-end contest ensued. Umyla Hanley brought Leigh back into the game with a 59th-minute try, only for Geyer to score at the other end seven minutes later. Robbie Mulhern added another try for Leigh, keeping the home team on edge, but Geyer's second try of the evening sealed the win for Huddersfield.
