Rival UK Politicians Vie for Italian PM Meloni's Favor

Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, who have historically competed for right-wing votes, now find themselves in an unusual competition for the attention of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This situation arose after a report in The Times suggested Meloni advised against a deal between Conservative leadership and Farage to unite the right. Following complaints from Farage's Reform party and, reportedly, Meloni's team, the article was revised to remove that specific claim.

Sources close to Farage informed The Guardian that Meloni had apologized to him this week for any confusion, congratulating him on his recent by-election victory in Clacton, where his opponent was famously a man in a bin costume. A Reform source indicated that Meloni's team expressed deep dissatisfaction with the events. The Italian Prime Minister's office stated that she "does not want to enter into domestic political dynamics and relations between British parties."

Earlier, Badenoch posted a selfie with Meloni after a visit to Rome, praising her "straight-talking, no-nonsense" approach. However, a source close to Badenoch expressed frustration with Reform's reaction, suggesting they were misinterpreting events. Following Badenoch's post, former Conservative MP Robert Jenrick, now with Reform, publicly criticized Badenoch, accusing her of fabricating statements. Farage also questioned the authenticity of Badenoch's claims about Meloni's words.

A Conservative spokesperson denied any false claims, stating that Reform was creating conspiracy theories to distract from their own financial issues. Meloni, a prominent populist leader known for her anti-immigration stance and social conservatism, came to power in Italy in 2022. She has since gained international influence, with her government on track to become one of the longest-serving in the republic's history and leading in polls ahead of next year's elections.

Raheem Kassam, a former advisor to Farage, noted Meloni's strong relationship with Farage since 2016, describing her as having admirable strength and conviction. He suggested that politicians like Trump and Farage admire Meloni for her ability to achieve power against the odds, comparing her determination to Donald Trump's approach. Kassam believes that politicians may be seeking to benefit from Meloni's successful image, citing her perceived respectability, stability, and effectiveness.

Meloni recently had a public disagreement with Donald Trump after he claimed she had "begged" for a photograph. Meloni, who was once labeled the "Trump whisperer," responded forcefully, stating that neither she nor Italy begs. They also clashed over Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV, with Meloni defending the Pope's calls for peace.

Despite these events, Farage continues to cultivate his relationship with Meloni, reportedly unconcerned about potential fallout with Trump. A Reform source suggested that Farage's allies do not feel obligated to oppose anyone Trump considers an enemy.
