Singapore Inflation Surges to Near Two-Year High, Below Forecasts
Singapore's inflation rate climbed to a nearly two-year peak in July, exceeding previous levels but coming in slightly below economists' predictions. This acceleration was largely attributed to escalating energy prices, influenced by global events such as the conflict in Iran, which in turn pushed up electricity costs.
The consumer price index in the city-state saw a year-on-year increase of 2.2% in July. This figure, while significant, was a touch lower than the 2.3% anticipated by economists surveyed by Reuters, and represented an uptick from the 1.9% recorded in June.
On a month-on-month basis, the consumer price index experienced a slight decrease of 0.2%.
According to a joint announcement from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, elevated global energy prices have directly impacted Singapore by increasing charges for electricity and gas, as well as contributing to higher transportation fares.
The statement further indicated that persistent high and fluctuating global oil prices, coupled with the expectation of reduced agricultural yields due to adverse weather conditions, are likely to drive up the cost of imported food. The outlook suggests a continued rise in prices for a broader range of imported goods and services.
In response to these inflationary pressures, the MAS had previously adjusted its monetary policy in July, a move that surprised many. At that time, the MAS had cautioned that imported inflation was projected to increase in the upcoming quarters, largely due to rising fuel and electronic component costs.
Core inflation, which excludes the prices of private transport and accommodation, also saw an increase, reaching 2%. This was slightly lower than the forecast of 2.2%.
In light of the broader economic climate, including the impact of the Iran war, Singapore had implemented two support packages for its citizens and businesses. These packages, totaling approximately S$2 billion, included direct cash handouts, consumption vouchers for households, and tax rebates for companies.
The release of this inflation data coincides with an upward revision of Singapore's GDP forecast for the entirety of 2026. The nation now anticipates growth to fall within the range of 4.5% to 5.5%, more than double the lower end of its earlier projection of 2%-4%.
