UK Pledges Missile Production Support to Ukraine During Kyiv Visit

During his first foreign visit as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham will travel to Kyiv on Monday, coinciding with Ukraine's Independence Day. He is set to announce a crucial initiative to enhance Ukraine's ability to produce its own long-range missiles.

Burnham's arrival in the Ukrainian capital comes at a critical juncture in the conflict, as Kyiv prepares for potential further Russian missile strikes and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces domestic political challenges. The visit underscores the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine.

A key aspect of the announcement involves the UK government granting permission for the European defense company MBDA to declassify information about UK-manufactured components of the Anglo-French Storm Shadow/Scalp missiles. This will enable Ukraine to develop and build its own version of these advanced weapons.

While the full impact of this initiative may take years to materialize, it signals a significant long-term commitment to Ukraine's defense industrial base and is likely to be met with a strong reaction from Moscow, further intensifying already strained UK-Russian relations.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, Burnham emphasized the UK's steadfast support: "On Ukraine’s 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes." He added, "I am proud of the contribution our country has made to Ukraine and I want the Ukrainian people to hear it directly from me that our support will not waver. After all, Ukraine’s security is our security."

"The friendship between our two countries will long outlast Russia’s illegal war. In both the fight and in the rebuilding to come, we will stand with Ukraine and deliver opportunities for people across both our countries," Burnham stated. "Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve. We will not back down until there is a just and lasting peace."

Burnham will also confirm the UK's commitment to assisting France in establishing missile assembly lines in Ukraine, a promise previously made by French President Emmanuel Macron last month. Macron had also recently assured President Zelenskyy of the delivery of separate interceptor missiles to help counter Russian attacks.

European leaders have collectively condemned the recent drone attack on a shopping center in central Ukraine, which resulted in numerous casualties, including in President Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih.

Despite current shortages of US-made Patriot interceptors and shifts in US commitments, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy has expressed a continued desire to procure more US-made Patriots, even at Ukraine's expense. He also mentioned agreements with France for air defense systems and with Germany for interceptors in the coming years.

President Macron has highlighted the international community's responsibility to equip Ukraine with the necessary means to defend itself. The British announcement, though a long-term project, signifies a crucial step towards enhancing Ukraine's self-sufficiency in advanced weaponry.

This move is anticipated to further escalate tensions with Russia, which has previously accused the UK of provoking conflict and warned of consequences for deeper involvement in Ukraine. The recent withdrawal of Russia's ambassador from London without a named replacement has fueled speculation about a diplomatic downgrade.

Prime Minister Burnham has reiterated that Russian threats will not deter the UK's commitment to Ukraine, stating, "We are not fair-weather friends. We will be there in Ukraine’s hour of need, and that won’t change."

During his visit, Burnham will participate in a meeting of the coalition of willing nations, a group of 34 countries supporting Ukraine, to reinforce this commitment. The meeting, co-chaired by Burnham and Macron, will focus on strategies to help Ukraine counter long-distance attacks.

Burnham will also attend Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations, the details of which are being kept confidential due to security concerns. He is expected to receive an award recognizing the UK's support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy is navigating his most significant internal political challenge, with calls for elections amidst the ongoing war. Zelenskyy has voiced concerns that holding elections during wartime could risk dividing the country, stating that it would be a "tsunami for the state that will split Ukraine."
