After a significant 15-year break, the Czech men`s national volleyball team is poised to make its grand return to the FIVB Men’s World Championship. This year`s tournament, scheduled for September 12-28 in Manila, Philippines, marks their 17th participation in this prestigious global event, a competition they once dominated in the mid-20th century.
Czechia, once a powerhouse in volleyball, has a storied history, including gold medals in the 1956 and 1966 World Championships, alongside four silver medals earned in 1949, 1952, 1960, and 1962. However, the team`s presence on the World Championship podium faded over the decades, with their last appearance dating back to 2010. Their upcoming return to the international stage after more than a decade signifies a promising new chapter for their enduring legacy.
A Resurgence Driven by Empowerment
This remarkable resurgence is largely attributed to the impactful FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Programme. The Czech Volleyball Federation received a substantial USD 84,000 in coach support for their men’s team, led by head coach Jiri Novak. Novak, 51, has been instrumental in their recent successes, guiding Czechia to a bronze medal in the 2024 European Golden League and a silver medal in the 2025 edition, demonstrating their increasing competitiveness across Europe.
Czechia secured its spot in the 2025 World Championship as the seventh world-ranked non-qualified team, a testament to their steady ascent back into the sport`s elite. They have been placed in Pool H, alongside formidable opponents: world No. 3 Brazil, No. 12 Serbia, and No. 26 China.
Tournament Schedule and Key Players
Their opening match at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City will be against Serbia on September 14, followed by matches against Brazil on September 16 and China on September 18. The top two teams from each of the eight pools will advance to the Round of 16.
Currently ranked 21st globally, Czechia presents a compelling blend of youthful energy, tactical skill, and experienced players. Coach Novak`s squad features Jan Hadrava, an experienced world-class opposite hitter capable of delivering on volleyball’s biggest stage. The 34-year-old Hadrava will be supported by Marek Frantisek Perry, who notably impressed in this year’s European Golden League. Martin Licek and Lukas Vasina are dynamic outside hitters, bringing both offensive power and consistent attack.
Nineteen-year-old Antonin Klimes stands out as one of Czechia’s brightest prospects. This 208cm middle blocker, alongside 32-year-old Adam Zajicek, will be crucial for Czechia`s blocking and net defense.
The team`s offense will be expertly orchestrated by 35-year-old Lubos Bartunek, undoubtedly Novak’s first-choice setter, known for his precision and creativity. Libero Milan Monik, 37, will once again be a cornerstone in reception and defense, ensuring the team’s backcourt stability.
Rekindling a Legacy
As the Czech flag flies high in Manila, it will reignite a spark for generations of fans. The team that once commanded the volleyball world is back. With strong leadership, emerging talents, and the strategic support of the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Programme, Czechia enters the 2025 World Championship determined to compete fiercely and rekindle a legacy that illuminated volleyball’s early history.
