Eighthfinal 7: USA v Canada

This crucial eighthfinal match between the North American rivals, USA and Canada, is scheduled to begin at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC) in Bangkok.

Their most recent encounter was earlier this season in the Volleyball Nations League, where USA narrowly defeated Canada in a thrilling tie-breaker played in Arlington. Historically, the United States has largely dominated their head-to-head series. Canada`s last victory over USA was in 2021 during a NORCEA Championship fixture, also a five-set marathon.

The United States has an impressive World Championship history, with three medals: bronze in 1990, silver in 2002, and a title victory in 2014. They finished fourth in the last edition in 2022. Currently ranked sixth in the FIVB World Ranking (a climb after China’s unexpected loss), USA advanced to these eighthfinals undefeated, leading Pool D. They secured four-set wins against Slovenia and Argentina, and a straight-set victory over Czechia. Avery Skinner was their top scorer in the group stage with 43 points.

Canada achieved their best World Championship result in 2022, finishing 10th. They are currently ranked 12th globally. In the initial phase of the current tournament, Canada finished as Pool E runners-up. They defeated Bulgaria in four sets, Spain in five sets, but lost in straight sets to Turkiye in the decisive match for first place. Andrea Mitrovic, an outside hitter, was their leading scorer with 46 points.

Eighthfinal 8: Turkiye v Slovenia

The eighthfinal stage of Thailand 2025 will conclude with an all-European showdown between Turkiye and Slovenia, starting at 20:30 local time (13:30 UTC).

These teams haven`t played an official match against each other since 2014, when Turkiye won three of their four encounters in the CEV European League.

Turkiye, the reigning European champions, are yet to reach a World Championship podium, with their best historical performance being sixth place in 2010. They have moved up to number five in the World Ranking following China`s recent dip. At Thailand 2025, Turkiye was the only team to emerge from the pool phase without dropping a single set, sweeping Spain, Bulgaria, and Canada to secure the top spot in Pool E. Their star opposite, Melissa Vargas, led the team`s scoring with an impressive 50 points across nine sets.

Slovenia stands out as the only one of the four rookie teams at this World Championship to advance to the eighthfinals. In Pool D, they managed to take a set from the strong USA team, two sets from Czechia, and secured a straight-set victory over Argentina, earning them second place in their pool. They have climbed five spots to number 20 in the World Ranking since the tournament began. Slovenia`s 22-year-old outside hitter, Fatoumatta Sillah, was the most effective attacker among all quarterfinalists in the pool phase, accumulating 59 kills and a total of 65 points. Eva Pavlovic Mori ranked as the second-best setter of the first round, while 20-year-old Nika Milosic placed third in both the best servers and best blockers categories.
