European Quartet Makes History in World Championships Semifinals

The 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship has reached an unprecedented stage. For the first time since the current competition format was introduced in 1978, all four semifinal berths are occupied by European teams. Historically, European teams did sweep the top four spots in the final standings of the competition in earlier editions from 1949 to 1966. With Italy, Poland, Czechia, and Bulgaria advancing to the last four in the Philippines, both the final match and the championship title are guaranteed to remain within Europe. This achievement underscores the remarkable dominance and consistent high performance of European volleyball on a global scale.

Czechia Secures Historic Semifinal Berth

Czechia started the day by securing their historic first World Championship semifinal appearance as an independent nation, defeating Iran 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21). Iran initially took a strong lead, winning the opening set with a powerful back-row attack from Ali Hajipour. However, the crucial second set proved to be the turning point. Despite Iran reaching set point first, Czechia maintained composure. Marek Sotola`s ace brought them level, and Lukáš Vašina followed with another decisive ace to clinch the set 27-25. This momentum shift allowed Czechia to win the third set comfortably and close out the match in the fourth, with Jan Galabov scoring the winning point.

Opposite Patrik Indra was instrumental for Czechia, leading with an impressive 22 points at a 69% success rate, ably supported by Vašina`s 21 points. For Iran, 21-year-old Poriya Khanzadeh and Hajipour each contributed 18 points, but their efforts were not enough to hold off the determined Czech resurgence.

Bulgaria`s Epic Comeback Against USA

In one of the tournament`s most thrilling encounters, Bulgaria staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat the United States 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-13). The USA initially controlled the match, with strong serving and tight defense securing them the first two sets. Bulgaria`s resurgence began in the third set, where Iliya Petkov dominated the middle with quick attacks and aces, leading to a decisive 25-17 win. This victory clearly shifted the momentum in their favor.

The fourth set was closely contested, with both teams trading points. However, at 24-22, Asparuh Asparuhov stepped up with a crucial kill block, forcing the match into a tie-break. In the decisive fifth set, Aleksandar Nikolov`s early scoring spree, contributing Bulgaria`s first four points, followed by two more from his younger brother Simeon, provided a critical early lead. Although the USA managed to save three match points, Petkov delivered the final spike, completing Bulgaria`s incredible and memorable comeback.

Aleksandar Nikolov was exceptional with 29 points, while Asparuhov added 12 and Petkov 10. The USA`s strong start ultimately faded as Bulgaria grew in confidence and refused to let the match slip away.

An All-European Final Guaranteed

Following Italy and Poland`s qualification a day earlier, today`s results solidify an entirely European semifinal bracket. This historic outcome not only guarantees a European champion but also an all-European final – a truly rare occurrence in the history of the World Championship. Italy, Poland, Czechia, and Bulgaria will now compete fiercely for a place in the ultimate showdown. This marks a profoundly significant moment for European volleyball, as the continent proudly claims every top position in this prestigious global competition.
