Fans were treated to a historic moment when the Bulgarian national team pushed one set to an astounding 40 points, establishing a new World Championship record for a single set score, a remarkable feat not witnessed since 2006.

Pool B Overview
Netherlands – Qatar 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23)
Poland – Romania 3-0 (34-32, 25-15, 25-19)
World ranking leaders Poland launched their World Championship campaign with a decisive 3-0 victory against Romania. Despite a challenging opening set that extended to 34-32, Poland quickly asserted their dominance, comfortably controlling the subsequent sets.
Polish captain Bartosz Kurek, returning to the squad after missing the 2025 VNL, was a pivotal figure, contributing 13 points (10 attacks, 2 blocks, 1 ace). Wilfredo Leon also delivered a strong performance with 14 points (11 attacks, 2 aces, 1 block), and Tomasz Fornal added 10 points (6 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 ace).
For Romania, Adrian Aciobăniței led his team with 11 points (9 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace), while Mircea Peța added 8 attacks and one block.
Poland demonstrated superior play across all critical statistics:

- Aces: 6–2

Pool D Recap
Cuba – Portugal 1-3 (25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 19-25)
USA – Colombia 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-14)
The USA, under the leadership of captain Micah Christenson, initiated their World Championship journey with a convincing 3-0 sweep against Colombia in Pool D. Christenson, making his comeback after foregoing the Volleyball Nations League, displayed excellent connection with his hitters.
Key contributors for the USA included:
- Ethan Champlin – 17 points (12 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks)
- Gabriel Garcia – 12 points (8 kills, 4 aces)
- Jordan Ewert – 11 points (10 kills, 1 block)
For Colombia, Miguel Ángel Amaranto was the top scorer with 11 kills, and Juan Felipe Benavides added 8 points, all from attack swings.
The USA dominated the match statistically, securing more kills (40-31), blocks (6-4), and aces (8-3), while also committing fewer errors (17-21).
This victory earned the USA 3 points in Pool D, leaving Colombia, who are making their debut at a World Championship, without any points.

Pool E Highlights
Slovenia – Chile 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16)
Slovenia, ranked sixth globally by FIVB, began their 2025 Men’s World Championship campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) over Chile in Pasay City. Their superior experience allowed them to maintain control throughout the entire match.
The top scorers for Slovenia were Tonček Štern with 15 points (11 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces), Nik Mujanović (playing as an outside hitter) with 12 points (9 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace), and Jan Kozamernik with 11 points (7 kills, 4 blocks).
Chile`s standout performers included Vicente Parraguirre, who scored all 12 of his points through offense, and Noé Aravena with 11 points (7 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace).
Statistically, Slovenia outperformed Chile in kills (47 vs. 30), blocks (10 vs. 5), and aces (5 vs. 1), despite committing slightly more errors (19 vs. 13).
This win secured Slovenia 3 points, placing them at the top of Pool E alongside Bulgaria after the conclusion of the first round.

Germany – Bulgaria 0-3 (38-40, 22-25, 20-25)
Bulgaria commenced their World Championship journey with a straight-sets victory over Germany, winning 3-0. The first set proved to be an absolute thriller: Germany rallied from a six-point deficit, forced overtime, and held multiple set points, but Bulgaria ultimately edged them out 40-38, setting a new Men`s World Championship record for a single set score.
Following this marathon set, Bulgaria skillfully carried their momentum, reduced their errors, and closed out the subsequent sets with greater control.
Exceptional performances came from the Nikolov brothers. Aleksandar Nikolov, the 21-year-old outside hitter, was the top scorer with an impressive 27 points (including two blocks and an ace). His 18-year-old brother, Simeon Nikolov, contributed nine points, including two aces, and boasted an 88% attack success rate. Another outside hitter, Martin Atanasov, added 11 points and two blocks.
Germany’s best player was György Grozer, their 40-year-old captain and opposite, who notched 13 points (three aces and three blocks). Anton Brehme (11 points) and Tobias Krick (10 points) also made significant contributions.
In overall statistics, Bulgaria surpassed Germany in kill points (53 vs. 43) and blocks (10 vs. 6). Germany held a slight advantage in aces (6 vs. 4) and committed fewer errors (23 vs. 25).

Pool G Updates
Canada – Libya 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 29-27)
Japan – Türkiye 0-3 (19-25, 23-25, 19-25)
Türkiye delivered a significant upset with a dominant 3-0 victory over world No. 5 Japan in their opening Pool G match. Despite being ranked 16th, Türkiye secured their first win against Japan since 2016.
Key contributors for Türkiye included:
- Efe Mandiraci, who served five aces (including the match point in the third set) and added two kill blocks, finishing with a match-high 17 points.
- Adis Lagumdzija, who scored 15 points, comprising three kill blocks and an ace, and sealed the match with the final point.
For Japan:
- Kento Miyaura led with 13 points, which included one ace and one kill block.
- Captain Yuki Ishikawa added 10 points, all derived from attacks.
Türkiye statistically outperformed Japan in several key areas:
- Aces: 7–1
- Kill blocks: 8–6
- Spike kills: 37–33
