FIVB Mourns the Loss of Paulo Roberto Moreira da Costa

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) expresses profound sorrow over the death of Paulo Roberto Moreira da Costa, affectionately known as Paulão, who passed away at 56 years old.

Paulão was a former Brazilian international volleyball player who went on to coach in Italy, Israel, and China. In 2018, he relocated to Chile to take charge of their national beach volleyball program.

Under his guidance, Marco and Esteban Grimalt achieved significant success, competing in consecutive Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024). He also led them to historic South American and Pan American titles, marking Chile`s best-ever results in the sport.

Paulão was highly respected for his remarkable achievements, as well as his unwavering passion, dedication, and compassionate nature. He significantly elevated Chile’s standing in international volleyball and served as an inspiration to numerous athletes and peers.

The FIVB extends its sincerest condolences to Paulão’s family, friends, the Chilean Volleyball Federation, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation, and the entire South American volleyball community during this period of immense loss.
