The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has reimagined one of sport`s most iconic moments – the award ceremony. It now brings together volleyball legends and current champions in a powerful celebration that highlights the sport`s rich heritage, global unity, and the ongoing development of the worldwide volleyball movement.
In a historic move for the Olympic Movement, athletes themselves have taken center stage to present medals and trophies at the FIVB Volleyball World Championships. This bold and innovative concept not only pays tribute to volleyball`s enduring legacy but also vividly celebrates its promising future.
Volleyball luminaries, including Jordan Larson (USA), Kim Yeon Koung (KOR), Nootsara Tomkom (THA), and Mireya Luis (CUB), presented awards to teams at the women`s competition in Thailand. A particularly touching moment occurred when Mireya Luis, a three-time Olympic and two-time World Champion, handed the trophy to the new women`s champions, Italy, forging a tangible link between generations of volleyball legends.
More sporting icons are slated to honor the podium finishers at the men`s competition in the Philippines, with medal matches scheduled for Sunday, September 28.
This initiative has garnered widespread approval from both athletes and fans, earning praise for its authenticity, strong sense of community, and remarkable ability to unite generations.
This approach directly embodies Focal Point 5 of the FIVB’s Strategic Vision 2032, titled “Athletes, History, and Heritage.” This pillar emphasizes empowering athletes with a stronger voice and ensuring the sport`s rich legacy remains prominent and celebrated.
“Volleyball is more than just a sport; it`s a global community built across generations,” stated Louise Bawden, President of the FIVB Athletes’ Commission. “When we honor volleyball legends alongside today`s champions on the world stage, we exemplify the collaboration, integration, peace, and solidarity that define our sport. Through initiatives like this, we inspire both past and future generations of athletes, thereby strengthening volleyball as a unified movement.”
