Houda’s Rapid Ascent: Egypt’s New Volleyball Power

Mahmoud Abdelbaki, widely known as Houda, has showcased a remarkable transformation over just two years, rapidly climbing the ranks in junior volleyball. During the 2023 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship, this talented outside hitter from Cairo accumulated 48 points throughout the tournament, delivering his most notable performance with 17 points against Argentina.

By the 2025 Men’s U21 World Championship, Houda had firmly cemented his role as one of Egypt’s primary offensive forces. His prolific scoring saw him gather an impressive 102 points in the pool stage alone, a figure nearly triple his total from two years prior, highlighted by an exceptional 31-point display against the United States.

Houda celebrates with a teammate after scoring against the United States at the Men’s U21 World Championship.

“In this championship I am doing much better than the last World Championship. This is a good tournament, and we are happy to be here,” he said.

For Houda, his personal growth is deeply connected to the immense pride he feels in representing Egypt, a team that has not consistently featured at this elite level in recent years. He fully comprehends the importance for his country to demonstrate its continued presence on the global stage.

“People say they haven’t seen Egypt for years, but we are still a very strong team in Africa,” he noted.

Seizing his platform on the world stage, Houda also conveyed a direct and heartfelt message to younger players who aspire to follow in his footsteps. His advice was both straightforward and profound.

“Work hard on yourself, study, train well, and try volleyball. God will be with you,” he advised.

This same unwavering work ethic has meticulously shaped his own career path. His decision to join Zamalek, recognized as one of Egypt’s most successful and ambitious clubs, has provided him with an excellent platform to compete at the highest domestic level and prepare for future international challenges.

“I transferred to Zamalek. It is a very good club, one of the best in Egypt, always competing for the championship and bringing in professionals. Things are good for me there,” he explained.

Even with the significant progress he has made within Egypt, Houda’s ambitions already look beyond national borders. He dreams of testing his formidable skills in Europe’s strongest leagues, viewing this as the essential next chapter in his development as an athlete.

“I want to work on myself and hope of playing in Italy or France one day,” Houda shared.

Houda rises for a spike against Türkiye in Jiangmen.

Like many aspiring players, he finds profound motivation by observing the sport`s biggest stars. His list of idols includes prominent names who consistently dominate international volleyball.

“I really like TJ DeFalco of USA, Wilfredo Leon of Poland, and also Alessandro Michieletto of Italy,” he revealed.

The transition from the U19 to the U21 level has been a monumental step for Houda. With his demonstrated scoring prowess and unwavering ambition, he has unequivocally shown that he is well-prepared for the subsequent stages of his burgeoning career.
