Italy continued their quest to defend their title at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. In the first eighth-final match held on Sunday in Pasay City, the Italian team showcased their dominance, overcoming a resilient Argentina in straight sets. Italy`s next opponent in the quarterfinals will be determined later on Sunday, following the match between Belgium and Finland.

The first set saw Italy rally from multiple three-point deficits to clinch it by the narrowest of margins. They maintained control throughout the second set, doubling their lead. Both sets were notably sealed by impressive attacks from Italy`s star setter and captain, Simone Giannelli. Argentina fiercely contested the third set, reaching a 20-20 tie. However, a remarkable sequence of three consecutive aces from opposite Yuri Romano brought Italy to match point. The match concluded three rallies later with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-22) victory, sealed by an elegant two-handed block-out play from outside hitter Mattia Bottolo.

Italy demonstrated superior offensive prowess, outscoring Argentina 45-38 in attack points and dominating from the service line with a 6-2 ace advantage. Outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto led Italy`s scoring with 15 points, which included three kill blocks. Yuri Romano contributed 14 points, comprising four aces and a kill block, while Mattia Bottolo added 13 points.

“I am incredibly happy with our performance; we played exceptionally well against an outstanding team in a challenging eighth-final today,” Michieletto commented. “Argentina displayed an impressive level, but we elevated our game significantly from the pool stage. Every match at a World Championship is immensely difficult, and while there have been many surprises, Italy remains strong here in Manila, and I hope we can continue our journey for another week. Yuri’s three consecutive aces in the third set were truly remarkable and decisive.”

Argentina matched Italy with eight kill blocks each and committed slightly fewer unforced errors, 16 compared to Italy`s 17. Argentina`s outside hitter Luciano Vicentin was a standout, matching Michieletto`s 15 points to become a joint top scorer. Vicentin`s points included an ace and a kill block, making him Argentina`s sole player to reach double digits in the match.

“We gave our absolute all, playing at one hundred percent, but ultimately, the result was 3-0,” Vicentin remarked. “Today wasn’t our day; it was Italy’s, and we congratulate them. We look forward to returning next year for another tournament, aiming to elevate Argentina`s standing and enjoy our volleyball.” He added, “Personally, it hasn`t been an easy year, but I’m content that my performance was consistent with the team`s level.”
