Korea, Curacao, and Trinidad & Tobago Claim Zonal Volleyball Titles with FIVB Support

EAVA Men’s Volleyball Zonal Championship

Supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program, Korea clinched the gold medal at the recent EAVA Men’s Volleyball Zonal Championship held in Zhangjiagang, China. Chinese Taipei and the host nation, China, secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

FIVB Empowerment Funding

The Korea Volleyball Association has received significant support through the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program, totaling USD 315,000 for coaching assistance to their national teams. Specifically, the men`s team benefits from the expertise of Brazilian coach Issanaye Ramires and physical trainer Lucas Rodrigues. Additionally, the national federation obtained USD 6,000 for a coach development knowledge transfer program and USD 11,500 for essential volleyball equipment.

The Korean team demonstrated dominant form throughout the EAVA zonal competition in Zhangjiagang, remaining undefeated across four matches. After triumphing in Pool B, they secured a decisive 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14) victory over Hong Kong in the semifinals. They then swept Chinese Taipei 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16) in the gold medal match to claim the Eastern Asian championship crown.

Chinese Taipei, who finished second in Pool B, only suffered two defeats during the tournament, both at the hands of Korea. In a thrilling semifinal, they overcame China with a dramatic 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 19-17) double-comeback win. China, playing on home soil, settled for bronze after defeating Hong Kong 3-1 (25-21, 25-11, 25-27, 25-22) in the third-place playoff.

In the match for fifth place, Mongolia edged out Macao in a closely contested 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12) encounter.

Most Valuable Player (MVP): Lim Dong-Hyeok, Korea’s 26-year-old opposite hitter, was honored as the MVP of the EAVA Men’s Volleyball Zonal Championship.

CAZOVA Senior Volleyball Championships

The CAZOVA Senior Volleyball Championships, featuring both men`s and women`s competitions, concluded last week in Nassau, Bahamas.

Men’s Tournament: Curacao Crowned Champions

Curacao emerged as the men’s Caribbean champions, maintaining an undefeated record throughout their five matches in Nassau. After leading Pool B, they secured a clean 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) semifinal victory against Jamaica. In the final, they faced the host team Bahamas, ultimately triumphing with another 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16) win.

In the other men`s semifinal, the Bahamas delighted their home crowd with a hard-fought 3-2 (15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9) victory over Suriname, earning their place on the podium. Jamaica secured the bronze medal by defeating Suriname 3-1 (25-23, 33-31, 29-31, 29-27) in the third-place match. Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guadeloupe finished in fifth, sixth, and seventh places, respectively.

Most Valuable Player (MVP): Derwin Colina, Curacao’s 34-year-old opposite, was named the men`s championship MVP.

Women’s Tournament: Trinidad & Tobago Secures Victory

The women’s zonal title was claimed by Trinidad & Tobago. After dominating Pool B, they delivered a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-9) shutout against Jamaica in the semifinals. In the final match, they secured a hard-fought 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 31-29) victory over Barbados, losing only one set throughout the entire tournament.

Barbados reached the final after a grueling five-set semifinal battle, overcoming Guadeloupe 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 17-15). Jamaica also earned a bronze medal in the women`s category, defeating Guadeloupe 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-23) in the third-place playoff. Suriname won the fifth-place match against the host team, Bahamas.

Most Valuable Player (MVP) & Best Server: Channon Thompson, Trinidad & Tobago’s 31-year-old outside hitter, was recognized as both the MVP and Best Server of the championship.
