Luizomar Takes Helm of Cuban Women’s Volleyball Ahead of World Championship

The experienced Brazilian coach, Luizomar de Moura, has signed a four-year contract to lead the Cuban women`s national volleyball team, with their sights set on the upcoming 2025 FIVB World Championship.

Luizomar de Moura has been officially named the new head coach of the Cuban women`s national volleyball team. His appointment comes just three weeks before the start of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women`s World Championship on August 22, for which the team, currently ranked 27th globally, is rigorously preparing. The Brazilian strategist has committed to a four-year term, aiming to elevate the team`s performance on the international stage.

At 59, Luizomar brings a wealth of coaching expertise from both national and club levels. Prior to this role, he notably coached the Kenyan national team, guiding them to the 2023 CAVB Women`s African Championship title. Under his leadership, Kenya also secured significant qualifications for major tournaments, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the 2022 World Championship, and the 2023 Volleyball Challenger Cup. In 2017, he earned a continental bronze medal with Peru at the CSV Women`s South American Championship. Furthermore, Luizomar dedicated many years to coaching Brazil`s youth national teams, achieving a silver medal at the 2011 FIVB Women`s Junior Volleyball World Championship, alongside numerous continental victories, showcasing his ability to develop talent across different age groups.

For nearly two decades, Luizomar has also been the esteemed head coach of the Brazilian club Osasco Sao Cristovao Saude. His extensive tenure there is marked by remarkable achievements, including leading the team to the coveted FIVB Volleyball Women`s Club World Championship title in 2012. The club also secured silver medals in 2010 and bronze in 2011 at the same championship. Beyond international club success, Osasco has collected multiple continental titles and national trophies under his guidance, most recently achieving a prestigious “golden double” this year by winning both the Brazilian Superliga and the Brazil Cup crowns, solidifying his reputation as a highly successful club coach.

Luizomar has seamlessly integrated into the Cuban team`s coaching staff and is currently working with them at the 2025 Women`s Volleyball Pan American Cup, which commenced on Sunday in Colima, Mexico. In this tournament, Cuba is competing in a challenging group alongside Peru, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Costa Rica, providing immediate competitive exposure under the new coach. Looking ahead to the World Championship in Thailand later this month, the Cuban squad is set to compete in Pool B in Phuket, where they will face formidable opponents: Belgium, Italy, and Slovakia, in what promises to be an exciting campaign for the revitalized team.
