Men`s Tournament Highlights
The Norwegian Volleyball Federation has received substantial funding for its national beach volleyball teams, including dedicated coach support for the men`s duos led by Jetmund Bernsten, and a grant for coach development programs. Despite navigating a challenging pool stage in Montreal that included three tie-breakers (winning two), the world`s top-ranked team, Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, demonstrated dominance in the elimination rounds by not dropping a single set. The “Beachvolley Vikings” secured a decisive 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) victory over Czechia`s reigning world champions Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner in the semifinals. They then proceeded to win the final against Sweden’s Jacob Holting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson with a clear 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) sweep. This triumph marks their second Elite gold in 2025, elevating their impressive Beach Pro Tour medal count to 24, including 13 gold.
The 10th-seeded Swedish duo, Holting Nilsson and Andersson, made a strong statement by securing their third consecutive Beach Pro Tour podium finish. They delivered a significant upset in the semifinals, overcoming their highly-ranked compatriots and reigning Olympic champions, David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig, in a thrilling 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 18-16) match. This remarkable performance increased their total Tour medals to eight.
Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded world champions Perusic and Schweiner of Czechia secured the bronze medal with a dramatic 2-1 (14-21, 22-20, 20-18) comeback win against the Olympic champions. This added to the acclaimed Czech pair`s Tour record, now boasting 11 podium finishes.
Women`s Tournament Highlights
The German Volleyball Federation`s beach volleyball program has benefited from significant coach support, with national teams training under the expert guidance of former European champion and two-time Olympian Christoph Dieckmann. Svenja Muller and Cinja Tillmann, ranked second globally and seeded seventh in Montreal, advanced smoothly to the semifinals without dropping any sets. Their winning streak faced its first major challenge in the semifinal against second-seeded Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, but they ultimately triumphed 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-10). This victory set the stage for a gold medal match against the fourth-seeded Canadian home favorites, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson. The Canadian pair, who are Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists, secured a 2-0 (21-15, 22-20) victory, leaving Muller and Tillmann with the silver medal, their seventh on the Beach Pro Tour.
Melissa and Brandie concluded the tournament undefeated, losing only two sets across their six matches. In a compelling rematch of the Paris 2024 Olympic gold medal final, the Canadian duo secured a 2-0 (21-11, 22-20) semifinal victory over Brazil`s Ana Patricia and Duda, who were seeded eighth. This outstanding performance marks their third gold and sixth overall medal on the Beach Pro Tour as a team.
For reigning Olympic champions Ana Patricia and Duda, this event was their first Beach Pro Tour appearance since April, when they had earned a Brasilia Elite bronze. Following their semifinal setback against the Canadian hosts, the former world number one team recovered impressively to clinch bronze with a dominant 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) victory over Tina and Anastasija in the third-place match. This secured their second consecutive bronze medal and their tenth overall Tour medal as a pair.
A total of 27 men`s teams and 28 women`s teams, representing 21 different nations, competed in the Montreal Elite event.
The next Beach Pro Tour Elite event is scheduled to take place in Hamburg, Germany, from August 27 to 31.
