Norway Returns to Men`s Beach Volleyball Podium Apex
The Norwegian beach volleyball team has once again claimed the men`s CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup title, becoming the first nation to win the tournament consecutively. The 2025 edition of the event concluded on Sunday in Espinho, Portugal.
Known as the “Beach Volley Vikings,” the Norwegians demonstrated dominant form throughout the competition, held from Thursday to Sunday at Praia da Baía. Their victory marks a triumphant return to the top of the podium, mirroring their success in the inaugural Nations Cup, which took place in Vienna, Austria, in 2022.
In the decisive final series, Norway faced the Netherlands. After the teams split wins in their initial two encounters, the championship was ultimately decided in a thrilling golden set, where Norway emerged victorious.
The Dutch started the final strongly, with Rio Olympic bronze medalist Alexander Brouwer and Paris Olympian Steven van de Velde defeating Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen in straight sets (21-11, 21-17) in the opening match.
The second match, however, was not completed due to an injury sustained by Dutch defender Yorick de Groot. He was unable to continue playing alongside his partner Stefan Boermans against the formidable Olympic, world, and four-time European champions, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, resulting in a forfeit victory for the Norwegians.
With the score tied, a golden set was required to determine the champions. Both nations opted for mixed lineups: Boermans and Brouwer represented the Netherlands, while Anders Mol and Berntsen paired up for Norway. In the end, the Norwegians proved superior, securing the title with a 15-12 victory.
This triumph in Espinho also grants Norway an additional slot in the upcoming 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship, scheduled to be held from November 14-23 in Australia, secured through the continental qualification pathway.
Earlier in the semifinals, Norway swept past Spain with two consecutive wins, while the Netherlands overcame Austria with a three-set victory followed by a straight-set win.
The Beach Nations Cup, introduced to the European beach volleyball calendar in 2022, is an exciting “country vs. country” competition, drawing parallels to the format of the Davis Cup in tennis.
