One week to go: Final countdown begins for first ever World Volleyball Day!

The final countdown is on! With just one week remaining until the inaugural World Volleyball Day on July 7, 2025, the global volleyball community is buzzing with anticipation for this momentous occasion.

Preparations are in full swing as players, fans, clubs, partners, and stakeholders worldwide unite to celebrate the sport enjoyed by hundreds of millions. Whether you`re on the sand, the court, in a park, or at home, seize this opportunity to grab a ball, gather friends, and make volleyball history.

Why July 7?

World Volleyball Day marks the anniversary of the sport`s first public demonstration by William G. Morgan in 1895. Initially known as “Mintonette,” the game was played only at the Holyoke YMCA until Morgan`s historic decision to bring two teams to Springfield College (formerly the YMCA Training School) to exhibit it to physical education leaders. This key event served as the initial public showing and paved the way for the sport`s growth outside Holyoke.

Now, 130 years on, 2025 inaugurates a new annual global tradition, highlighting volleyball`s unique ability to connect people worldwide.

How to Get Involved

Everyone is encouraged to participate! This day is for everyone, from recreational players to professionals, and from devoted fans to families at home. Here are a few ways to join in:

  1. Keep the ball in the air, in your own style!
  2. Share on social media using the hashtag #WorldVolleyballDay.

Celebrations Already Underway

Around the world, World Volleyball Day is already inspiring moving stories and community gatherings as the early celebrations commence.

In El Salvador, for instance, a player shared how volleyball empowered him and restored his self-belief after he lost part of his foot as a child. Overcoming challenges, he said the sport gave him strength, confidence, and “the ability to fly”.

In India, Ranjeet Kumar Dass participated in a friendly match in Ujan Barbari village, Assam, organized by Hansbahini Yuvak Sangha. Teams from Ujan Barbari and Kardaiguri demonstrated genuine sportsmanship and community unity during the game.

Across the globe, the broader volleyball community, including elite athletes, Continental and Zonal Associations, and National Federations, are mobilizing their networks to encourage participation.

So, mark your calendars, prepare your cameras, and let the final countdown commence. Let`s make history and celebrate volleyball – Together as One.
