The FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship 2025 officially commenced on Friday with an energetic opening ceremony held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. This event kicks off over two weeks of intense competition involving 32 national teams, notably marking the Philippines` historic debut as the host nation.
The opening ceremony beautifully merged traditional elements with contemporary entertainment. Performances included the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, which showcased Philippine cultural heritage, followed by the rhythmic and dynamic Buganda Drumline and Dancers. Local pop artists G22 and Karencitta also took the stage, with Karencitta delivering the World Championship`s official theme song. A vibrant parade of flags formally presented all participating nations.
Concluding the ceremony, South Korean K-pop sensation BOYNEXTDOOR electrified the audience with a captivating performance, ensuring a memorable end to the night`s festivities before the volleyball matches commenced.
Patrick C. Gregorio, Chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the significant national support for this unprecedented event as the Philippines hosts the Men`s World Championship for the first time. Regarding the event`s preparation, he remarked, “Beyond being world-class entertainment, this competition is the result of our nation`s finest minds and industries collaborating.”
FIVB President Fabio Azevedo also addressed the attendees, highlighting the broader significance of the event. He noted that this 21st edition of the World Championship marks its return to Asia and gathers the world`s premier volleyball teams in the Philippines.
The FIVB President expressed his gratitude, stating, “On behalf of the Global Volleyball Movement, I extend my thanks to everyone involved in the 2025 World Championships. This marks a historic first for the Men`s World Championships in Southeast Asia, and also the first time 32 teams are competing. To the athletes, you are the essence of this event – compete fiercely, fairly, and with mutual respect. To the fans, we hope you savor every moment of these World Championships. And to the Filipino people, thank you! Let us celebrate volleyball`s spirit of collaboration, friendship, and teamwork.”
Prior to the inaugural match, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos performed the ceremonial serve, officially inaugurating the tournament. They were accompanied by their sons, Joseph Simon and William Vincent, the latter serving as co-chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
The Philippine men`s national team then made its highly anticipated World Championship debut against Tunisia in Pool A. The experienced North African squad secured a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-17, 25-23). Despite the loss, the host team, fueled by enthusiastic home crowd support, delivered a spirited performance, particularly pushing the third set to a tight finish, marking their valiant entry onto volleyball`s grandest stage.
The tournament will run until September 28th, with matches held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila. The final match will decide if Italy successfully defends its title or if a new champion will be crowned.
