The CEV Small Countries Association (SCA) Zonal Tour made a triumphant return to Scottish shores, with Day 1 in Ayr showcasing the host nation`s dominance in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Following a day filled with thrilling beach volleyball action, six Scottish teams – three male and three female pairs – successfully topped their respective groups, securing direct progression to the quarterfinals amidst enthusiastic home support.
Women’s Competition: Trio of Scottish Duos Impress
In the women`s category, Scotland`s top-seeded duo, Lynne Beattie and Mhairi Wallace, made a commanding entrance, defeating their Andorran and Maltese rivals in straight sets, conceding no more than 16 points in any game. Their formidable performance earned them first place in Pool A and a direct path to the quarterfinals. Kathryn Barbour and Alexis Crusey demonstrated similar strength in Pool B, achieving two 2-0 victories, including a notable win against fellow Scottish players Kirsty Hall and Holly Scott. Hall and Scott later advanced to the Round of 12 after a dramatic comeback victory over Northern Ireland in the afternoon. The direct quarterfinal berth from Pool C went to Alexandra Clegg-McKeown and Melissa Coutts, who remained undefeated after a tense three-set win against Malta. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland`s Tara Mooney and Grace Allen secured their quarterfinal spot by winning their decisive Pool D match against their Irish counterparts. The remaining quarterfinalists will be determined by the winners of Saturday morning’s Round of 12 matches.
Men’s Competition: Home Strength Across the Board
The men`s competition likewise highlighted Scotland`s considerable talent and depth. Euan Mackenzie Fraser and Ben McHardy displayed excellent form, winning both their Pool B matches and not dropping a single set against either domestic or Northern Irish opponents. Ewan Ramsay and Cole Turnbull were equally impressive in Pool D, securing two decisive 2-0 victories, including composed wins against a youthful Icelandic team and an experienced Northern Irish squad. James McHardy and Ross McKelvie fought through a challenging match against Wales to claim the top spot in Pool A, completing Scotland’s trio of male quarterfinalists. Additionally, the experienced Ferry brothers, Pascal and Vincent, representing Monaco, showcased their skill to top their Pool. After the final pool matches conclude on Saturday morning, the remaining eight teams will vie for the last four quarterfinal slots.
Looking Ahead
With six Scottish teams already in the quarterfinals, the host nation is poised for a strong showing as the knockout stages commence on Day 2. The competition resumes in Ayr with the Round of 12 elimination matches, scheduled for 11:10 and 12:00 for the women, and 12:50 and 13:40 for the men. These crucial matches will decide the final quarterfinalists before the Scottish athletes return to the sand in pursuit of medals on home ground. The fervent energy and unwavering support from the Scottish spectators were palpable throughout Day 1, and with the knockout rounds of Beach Volleyball approaching, fans can anticipate even greater drama as the SCA Zonal Tour progresses.
