Spain`s women`s national volleyball team is set to return home in high spirits after clinching their first victory at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship. In their final Pool E match in Nakhon Ratchasima on Wednesday, they triumphed over continental rivals Bulgaria.

Following commendable performances in earlier matches against strong teams like Canada and Türkiye, the Spanish squad finally converted their efforts into a win. They overcame Bulgaria with a dominant 3-1 scoreline (25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18), ensuring a positive exit from the tournament.

This crucial win in the “European Derby” elevated Spain to four points in the standings, securing them a third-place finish in Pool E. Bulgaria, unfortunately, ended their three matches in the pool without any points, finishing in fourth.

Captain and outside hitter Maria Segura was instrumental in Spain`s success, leading her team with an impressive 17 points, comprising 14 kills, two aces, and one block. Middle blockers Sofía Varela and Lola Hernández also delivered strong performances, contributing 16 and 13 points, respectively.

“We came here to demonstrate our capabilities as a team,” Segura stated after the match. “It was unfortunate that we couldn`t secure a win against Canada, despite playing exceptionally well. We were determined to return home with a victory, and we committed ourselves fully to achieving that today. At this competitive level, when an opportunity arises, we must seize it, and that`s precisely what we did. I believe we showcased ourselves as a formidable team capable of competing against anyone.”

For Bulgaria, outside hitter Miroslava Paskova was the top scorer in their final Nakhon Ratchasima encounter, tallying 15 points (13 kills, two blocks). Middle blocker Nasya Dimitrova also contributed significantly with 12 points, including ten kills and two aces.

Spain showcased superiority across all aspects of the game on Wednesday. They outscored Bulgaria in kills (50 to 46), blocks (13 to 11), and aces (11 to two), while also committing fewer errors (20 to 23).

In another match played earlier on Wednesday, Türkiye secured the top spot in the pool before the elimination rounds. They achieved nine points by defeating second-placed Canada 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-13).
