Thailand on Alert After Seventh Consecutive VNL Loss

Reigning Asian champions Thailand are facing an increasing threat of relegation in the Volleyball Nations League 2025. Their recent 3-0 defeat against the Dominican Republic in Arlington marked their third straight loss in the third week of the preliminary phase and their seventh consecutive loss overall in the tournament.

The match at the College Park Center saw the Thais challenge the Dominican team in certain moments, but they ultimately could not withstand the Caribbean side`s offensive power, losing in straight sets with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-23.

Tournament Standing Implications

Despite their difficult run, Thailand currently sits just above the relegation spot, ranking 17th with one win and five points. This gives them a narrow one-point advantage over 18th-placed Korea, who would be relegated if the preliminary phase ended now. However, Korea still has two matches remaining against Bulgaria and France, whereas Thailand has only one game left in Arlington, scheduled for Sunday against Canada.

The Dominican Republic`s win, their first in three matches played in Arlington, propelled them from 13th to 10th place in the VNL standings. With five wins and 13 points, they are now mathematically out of contention for a place in the Finals, unable to catch the 8th-placed United States.

Key Players and Quotes

For the Dominican Republic, team captain and outside hitter Brayelin Martinez delivered a match-high performance, scoring 17 points from 13 kills and four blocks. She was well-supported by her sister, middle blocker Jineiry Martinez, and opposite Gaila Gonzalez, who each added 15 points.

Speaking about the team`s focus, Gaila Gonzalez stated, “We have the World Championship coming soon, and we’re trying to prepare for it. We’re trying to get better every match so we can get there in good shape. We have some new players in the team this season and we’re enjoying it a lot.”

On the Thai side, captain and outside hitter Ajcharaporn Kongyot was the sole player to reach double-digit scoring, finishing with 13 points (11 kills, one block, one ace). Middle blocker Thatdao Nuekjang and opposite Pimpichaya Kokram each contributed nine points.

Thai setter Pornpun Guedpard reflected on their VNL journey this year: “We haven’t played so well in the VNL so far this year. I don’t think we’ve been as competitive as we were in past seasons, but we have many young players, and it’s been good for them to be here and get some experience. We’re looking to win our last match. We only got one victory so far, but we’re confident we can get another one.”

Upcoming Schedule in Arlington

The day`s second match in Arlington features China facing Canada. On Saturday, Germany will take on China, followed by the host team United States playing against regional rivals Canada.
