The reigning European volleyball champions from Türkiye have initiated their 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship journey with a compelling performance, securing a decisive victory against their continental rivals, Spain, in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Under the strategic direction of coach Daniele Santarelli, the Turkish squad demonstrated superior control, rapidly claiming the first two sets. They sustained their strong momentum to conclude the third set, sweeping the Spanish team 3-0 with set scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-23. This inaugural triumph earned Türkiye their first three points in the tournament`s Pool E.
Star opposite Melissa Vargas was a key figure in Türkiye`s win, contributing 14 points.
In her debut World Championship appearance, rookie Yaprak Erkek spearheaded the Turkish offense, leading the team with an impressive 15 points, comprising 11 kills, two blocks, and two aces. Melissa Vargas, the acclaimed opposite hitter, closely followed with 14 points (ten kills, two blocks, two aces), while outside hitter Ebrar Karakurt also made a significant impact, adding 12 points (ten kills, one block, one ace).

For Spain, outside hitter Ana Escamilla emerged as their most prolific scorer, registering 13 points, all from successful attacks. Middle blocker Lucía Varela also achieved double-digit points, contributing ten (seven kills, two aces, one block).

Türkiye showcased superiority over Spain across all primary statistical categories, outscoring their opponents in kills (43 to 37), blocks (seven to three), and aces (six to five). Furthermore, they demonstrated greater precision and discipline, committing fewer unforced errors (16 compared to Spain`s 18).
Canada Secures Crucial Victory Against Bulgaria
Elsewhere in Nakhon Ratchasima, Canada also marked a strong start to their tournament, securing a pivotal 3-1 win over Bulgaria (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18). This victory could be instrumental in determining their advancement to the subsequent stages of the championship.
Andrea Mitrovic, an outside hitter, exhibited a formidable offensive presence for the Canadians, topping the team’s scoresheet with 17 points (16 kills, one ace). Middle blocker Nyadholi Thokbuom and opposite Anna Smrek also delivered commendable performances, adding 15 and 12 points respectively.
On the Bulgarian side, opposite Mikaela Stoyanova led her team’s efforts with 15 points (12 kills, two blocks, one ace), supported by middle blocker Nasya Dimitrova, who contributed ten points.
The four teams are scheduled to return to the court on Monday. Canada will commence the day`s matches against Spain at 16:00 local time (9:00 GMT), followed by Türkiye’s encounter with fellow European rivals, Bulgaria, at 19:30 (12:30 GMT).
