With the Olympic Games LA28 just three years away, the LA28 Organising Committee has officially confirmed the competition schedule and format for both volleyball disciplines – indoor and beach volleyball. Both sports are set to feature prominently in the Games programme, scheduled to take place from July 14 to 30, 2028.
As previously announced, beach volleyball will be hosted at Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, designated as an LA28 Venue City. This stunning coastal setting promises a spectacular backdrop for one of the Olympics` most captivating and visually dynamic events. Indoor volleyball matches will be held at the Anaheim Arena, a premier venue known for hosting sports and entertainment, providing an excellent stage for memorable Olympic volleyball experiences.
For beach volleyball, the preliminary rounds are scheduled from Saturday, July 15 through Saturday, July 22, featuring three sessions daily for both the men`s and women`s competitions (with the exception of Saturday, July 22, which will have two sessions). The Round of 16 matches will take place on Sunday, July 23 and Monday, July 24, with four sessions for each competition on both days.
Quarter-finalists will compete on Tuesday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 26, with both afternoon and evening sessions planned. The semi-finalists in both men`s and women`s events will then face off on Thursday, July 27. The champions for men`s and women`s beach volleyball will be crowned during the evening sessions on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29, respectively.
For indoor volleyball, the preliminary rounds will also commence on Saturday, July 15, concluding on Sunday, July 23. Four sessions are scheduled daily during the preliminary phase for both the men`s and women`s competitions.
Quarter-finals for both indoor volleyball tournaments will be held across four sessions on Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25. The final four teams in each gender will then compete in the semi-finals on Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27. The bronze and gold medal matches for men and women will take place from Friday, July 28 through Sunday, July 30, with the final indoor volleyball match marking the conclusion of the sport`s events at the Olympic Games LA28.
This schedule announcement follows the notable success of volleyball and beach volleyball at the recent Olympic Games Paris 2024, which were widely praised as particularly successful for these sports. From achieving record global viewership to showcasing world-class performances in iconic settings, the sports captivated audiences worldwide and solidified their position as fan favourites.
The FIVB remains committed to working closely with the LA28 Organising Committee to support the delivery of a truly memorable few weeks for the global volleyball community.
Please note that, consistent with previous Games, this provisional competition schedule is subject to potential changes leading up to the Games in 2028. Later this year, LA28 intends to release a more detailed schedule specifying the order of men`s and women`s tournaments for the 2028 Games.
