The Philippines is now home to an extraordinary volleyball court mural, a vibrant fusion of sport, art, and community spirit. The Volleyball Legacy Art Project, initiated by the FIVB and its Foundation, has transformed a standard outdoor court into a magnificent canvas adorned with portraits of seven elite volleyball players.
This artistic endeavor coincides with the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship being held in the Philippines, a significant event as it marks the first time this prestigious tournament has come to Southeast Asia.
The Artist Behind the Vision
Urban artist Maya Carandang, celebrated for his innovative approach to turning sports courts into dynamic public art, brought this mural to life. His ongoing MAYA100 project aims to create 100 such artworks across the Philippines, each celebrating local culture and community through bold and engaging designs.
World-Class Players Depicted
The court proudly showcases likenesses of seven prominent athletes participating in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship:
- Bryan Bagunas – Captain, Philippines Men’s National Volleyball Team (Host Country)
- Tomasz Fornal – Poland (World Ranking 1)
- Simone Giannelli – Italy (World Ranking 2)
- Ricardo Lucarelli – Brazil (World Ranking 3)
- Jean Patry – France (World Ranking 4)
- Yuki Ishikawa – Japan (World Ranking 5)
- Eric Shoji – USA (World Ranking 6)

The mural was officially unveiled at the Royal View Garden Residences in Manila. The ceremony drew notable figures including artist Maya Carandang, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo, Asian Volleyball Confederation President Ramon Suzara, and Bryan Bagunas, one of the featured athletes.
