Antonino La Gumina has opted for Salernitana, a move that, at first glance, might seem like a step back in his career. However, it is likely one of the most rational decisions he could make. Leaving Serie B again to return to Serie C is not an admission of defeat after recent difficulties, but rather an attempt to reclaim the leading role that has eluded him for too long.

La Gumina concluded the 2025/26 season with Inter U23 in Serie C, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. This statistic is crucial to understanding his current choice: when he has found consistency, responsibility, and a league where he feels central, the Palermo-born player has consistently delivered.

From Palermo's Promise to Serie B Struggles

La Gumina's career story is one of a talent who, at a young age, seemed destined for a more straightforward path. Having risen through Palermo's youth academy, scoring 45 goals in 59 games for the Primavera team, he also shone in the 2016 Viareggio tournament, earning the top scorer title and the Golden Boy award. His breakthrough came in Serie B in 2017/18, with 29 appearances and 9 goals in the league, plus two more in the playoffs.

These numbers led to his move to Empoli in the summer of 2018, with the club investing approximately 9 million euros to bring him to Serie A. However, the transition did not yield the desired results: two goals in the top flight and performance hampered by an injury. Since then, his career has been marked by loans, club changes, and periods where consistency remained an issue.

Sampdoria became a lengthy but never truly definitive stop. Then came Como, Benevento, a return to Genoa, a spell with Mirandes in Spain, and finally Cesena. In the 2024/25 season, combining his time at Sampdoria and Cesena, he made 21 appearances and scored just 2 goals in Serie B. These statistics speak volumes about a phase where La Gumina struggled to impose himself.

Serie C is Not Surrender: It's a Response

This is precisely where his move to Salerno takes on a different significance.

A year ago, La Gumina had already agreed to move down a division, transferring to Inter U23. This was not a career-winding-down period, but a season where he rediscovered his goal-scoring touch and a central role, netting 10 goals in 27 league games. Statistical platforms also highlight his improved performance compared to his recent Serie B seasons.

This is the key to his transfer to Salernitana. La Gumina is not arriving in Salerno to merely get by, but with the intention of being one of the primary offensive players for coach Serse Cosmi's team. So much so that the Granata club decided to invest in his experience, offering him a contract until June 30, 2028, with an automatic renewal tied to specific conditions.

This is not a minor detail. At 30 years old, after several seasons where he was more of a player to be recovered than an announced protagonist, La Gumina needs to feel important above all else. And Serie C, today, can offer him exactly what Serie B has not consistently provided him in recent years: playing time, responsibility, and trust.
