Coventry City Overcomes Plymouth's Fightback to Advance in Carabao Cup
Coventry City, a newly promoted Premier League side, experienced a tense moment in their Carabao Cup second-round tie against League One's Plymouth Argyle, ultimately securing a 4-2 victory at Home Park.
The Sky Blues showcased their quality by quickly establishing a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes, with goals scored by Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni. However, Plymouth mounted a comeback, leveling the score nine minutes into the second half with goals from debutant Danny Irow and Xavier Amaechi.
Substitute Ephron Mason-Clark further extended Coventry's advantage shortly after coming on in the 62nd minute, and Victor Torp sealed the win with a penalty in the 78th minute.
Awoniyi opened the scoring for Coventry in the third minute, finding the net after a well-executed flick-on from Caleb Yirenkyi. Yirenkyi's impressive pass, originating from a through ball by captain Liam Kitching, set Awoniyi up to calmly finish past home goalkeeper James Storer.
Just two minutes later, Coventry doubled their lead through a swift counter-attack. Awoniyi initiated the move, sending Rudoni on his way, who then clinically finished from the edge of the box, again beating Storer.
Jake Bidwell came close to extending the lead in the 18th minute, his header narrowly missing the post from Joel Latibeaudiere's accurate cross.
Plymouth responded in the 21st minute through Irow. After cutting in from the left and evading Latibeaudiere, he fired a low shot past City goalkeeper Daniel Bentley into the far corner. Midfielder Harvey White provided the assist, launching Irow down the left flank with a superb pass from his own half.
Awoniyi had an opportunity to score his second in the 27th minute but headed wide from close range following a deep cross from Latibeaudiere.
Plymouth threatened again in the 31st minute when Striker Will Evans' shot deflected off Bentley and struck the post, after the goalkeeper failed to hold onto White's long-range effort.
The home side drew level in the 54th minute. Second-half substitute Amaechi dispossessed City defender Kitching, advanced into the box, and unleashed a powerful low drive past Bentley into the corner.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto volleyed just over the bar from Mason-Clark's cross in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Mason-Clark restored Coventry's lead, scoring from close range after converting Torp's driven cross.
Torp then provided Coventry with a more comfortable cushion by converting a penalty after substitute Joe Edwards fouled Brandon Thomas-Asante. Thomas-Asante had a chance to further increase Coventry's lead in stoppage time but fired his volley over the bar from the edge of the six-yard box.
