Nunez's Halfway Line Stunner Propels Ipswich Past Leicester in Carabao Cup

Marcelino Nunez delivered a remarkable goal from the halfway line, contributing significantly to Ipswich's hard-fought 3-1 triumph over Leicester in the Carabao Cup.

This encounter, a stark contrast to their Premier League fixture just 15 months prior, saw Leicester arrive at Portman Road following a disappointing home defeat in League One. Despite this, under-fire manager Russell Martin witnessed his Foxes team endure a goalless first half.

Sindre Walle Egeli showcased Premier League quality for Gary O'Neil's side with a precise left-footed finish, breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute. However, 19-year-old Olabade Aluko quickly equalized for Leicester five minutes later, earning them a deserved leveller.

The decisive moments came from ex-Norwich midfielder Nunez, who fittingly had the final say in a match involving two former teammates from his time at Carrow Road.

Nunez's powerful shot from distance found the back of the net off the post in the 71st minute, marking his first goal at Portman Road since his summer transfer. He then sealed the victory with an incredible 50-yard lob in stoppage time, securing Ipswich's place in the Carabao Cup third round for only the second time in 11 seasons.

Martin had faced boos after Leicester's loss to Burton, and his team nearly conceded an opener within the first 33 seconds, but Chuba Akpom was unable to capitalize.

Leicester, to their credit, settled into the game. Brighton loanee Tom Watson sent a shot wide and later tested Christian Walton with a curled effort.

Ipswich's backup goalkeeper, Walton, thwarted Christian McFarlane's chip in the 20th minute after a well-placed pass from Louis Page. At the other end, Jakub Stolarczyk made a fine save from Dara O'Shea's header.

However, Leicester finished the half strongly, with Conor Chaplin's curling shot being pushed wide by Walton.

Ipswich midfielder Kasey McAteer had a goal disallowed for offside two minutes after halftime. Chaplin was then substituted to a standing ovation on the hour mark by Martin, shortly before the home team broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute.

Akpom played a through ball to Jack Clarke, who then squared it for Egeli to score.

Five minutes later, Leicester drew level when Page's corner was flicked on by Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and 19-year-old Aluko made a slight touch to score his first professional goal.

Nunez ensured there would be no upset when he fired in off the post after Woyo Coulibaly lost possession. Following a missed one-on-one opportunity by Akpom, the Chilean international secured his second goal.

After the ball dropped inside the center circle, Nunez spotted Stolarczyk off his line and executed an audacious lob over the Leicester goalkeeper, making it back-to-back wins for O'Neil's Ipswich.
