Salesforce's stock experienced a notable surge of 12% in extended trading on Wednesday. This upward movement followed the cloud software provider's announcement of financial results and future guidance that exceeded Wall Street's expectations.

The company's performance relative to LSEG consensus was as follows:

  • Adjusted Earnings Per Share: $5.90
  • Revenue: $11.35 billion (compared to the expected $11.32 billion)

In the second fiscal quarter, which concluded on July 31st, Salesforce reported an 11% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. Net income saw a substantial jump of 87%, reaching $3.53 billion, or $4.29 per share, up from $1.89 billion, or $1.96 per share, a year prior.

A significant contributor to these results was a $2.6 billion gain from strategic investments, notably from Salesforce's stake in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. Earlier in May, Anthropic announced equity funding that valued the company at an impressive $965 billion. Salesforce's free cash flow also saw a significant boost, climbing 81% to $1.10 billion, considerably higher than the StreetAccount consensus of $643.2 million.

Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter, Salesforce projects adjusted earnings per share to range between $3.42 and $3.44, with revenue anticipated to be between $11.42 billion and $11.50 billion. These projections are slightly above the LSEG consensus of $3.38 in adjusted EPS and $11.41 billion in revenue.

For the entire fiscal year, Salesforce now anticipates earnings per share between $16.67 and $16.71, with revenue forecasted to be between $46.1 billion and $46.4 billion, indicating an 11% growth rate at the midpoint. This full-year outlook slightly adjusts the previous guidance provided in May, which projected $14.06 to $14.12 in adjusted earnings per share for fiscal 2027 on $45.9 billion to $46.2 billion in revenue.

In addition to its financial performance, Salesforce also unveiled Claudeforce on Wednesday. This new plugin for Anthropic's Claude is designed to enhance sales operations by composing emails, providing relevant information, and updating records through chat interactions.

The company also highlighted recent strategic moves, including a $1.6 billion contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for transforming veteran care and services, and plans to acquire the customer service startup Fin for $3.6 billion.

Annualized revenue from Agentforce AI products has now surpassed $1.5 billion, marking a substantial 240% year-over-year increase. This growth rate represents an acceleration from the over 200% growth seen in the previous quarter.

Salesforce reported $33.5 billion in current remaining performance obligation, a key metric indicating revenue expected to be recognized within the next year. This figure was above the StreetAccount consensus of $33.22 billion.

As of Wednesday's market close, Salesforce shares had seen a year-to-date decline of 22%, contrasting with the S&P 500 index's 12% gain during the same period. The market has been navigating investor sentiment regarding the potential impact of generative artificial intelligence on established software companies.
