Technical director of the Oranje, Nigel De Jong, revealed the selection process: "After the World Cup, we made a decision on the shortlist of candidates. The first contact was with Guardiola, then Arne Slot emerged, and subsequently, we focused on Xavi."
Addressing his appointment, the new Netherlands coach downplayed any perceived ranking in the decision-making process. "Well, it's not a bad position to have arrived after Guardiola and Slot, is it? I don't care if I'm third or tenth, because I have arrived at the university of football," Xavi commented.
His debut match in charge of the national team will be the Nations League fixture on September 24th against Germany, who will be managed by Jurgen Klopp. "I am excited and motivated because we are playing against one of the best teams in Europe and against one of the best coaches of recent years." Xavi's objective for his tenure in the Netherlands is clear: "We will work with passion, ambition, and desire, so that the 18 million inhabitants of the Netherlands are proud of our team."
