Sinner Leads ATP Rankings, Zverev Overtakes Alcaraz, Cobolli Reaches Record High
Flavio Cobolli has achieved a significant milestone, reaching the 6th position in the ATP rankings this week. This makes him the sixth Italian tennis player in history to reach such a high standing in the men's world rankings.
Prior to 1973, only Nicola Pietrangeli, who was ranked 3rd in 1959 and 1960, had been among the world's top six. He remained the Italian with the highest ranking in men's tennis until Jannik Sinner, the first Italian to become world number 1.
In the era of computerized rankings, the list of Italian Top 6 players also includes Adriano Panatta (ranked 4th in August 1976), Lorenzo Musetti (ranked 5th in January 2026), and Matteo Berrettini (ranked 6th in January 2022).
This achievement comes after Cobolli's first Masters 1000 semifinal appearance in Cincinnati. It fuels his ambitions for the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which the world number 1 Jannik Sinner will not participate in.
Regardless, Sinner is guaranteed to remain at the top of the rankings at least until early October, leading up to the Shanghai Masters 1000. Following closely is Alexander Zverev, now at world number 2, as Carlos Alcaraz lost the 1,000 points he earned last year by winning the Cincinnati title.
Alcaraz, currently third, will return to the court at the US Open after a four-month layoff due to a wrist injury. As the defending champion, he can at best maintain his current 7,160 points, without gaining any.
