Memphis Depay Defends Controversial Music Video Featuring Burning Corinthians HQ

Dutch international Memphis Depay has defended the release of his new music video, which features the headquarters of Brazilian club Corinthians engulfed in flames. Depay described the imagery as "just art," a statement made shortly after a contract dispute with the club.

Just days prior, the former Manchester United player had agreed to a "significant" pay cut to remain with Corinthians. This development followed the club's decision the previous week not to renew his contract.

However, Depay has now faced criticism for releasing the music video for his track titled 'Don't Panic'. The video was released only 24 hours after the 32-year-old helped Corinthians advance to the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. The video appears to allude to his recent disagreements with the club, showing him watching their administrative center, Parque Sao Jorge, ablaze.

In the song's lyrics, Depay does not explicitly name individuals but refers to "rivals" and sings, "I know a vice-president who is now my enemy."

Corinthians fans are currently expressing their discontent with the club's management due to escalating financial and governance concerns. To mitigate any potential backlash from the video, Depay took to social media to clarify that it was filmed "months ago."

"I hope it's a peaceful protest where people can express what they think calmly. About my music, I insist it's just art," he stated on social media.

Regarding the imagery of the club's headquarters on fire, Depay emphasized his strong opposition to "any type of violence of all kinds."
