Is Barry Emerging as Everton's Reliable Striker?
When Barry transferred to Everton last summer, he joined a club with aspirations of a brighter future. In the preceding years, the Toffees had experienced a continuous cycle of managers, all grappling with relegation battles. Furthermore, Everton faced a points deduction for violating the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
These circumstances meant that when the recruitment team, led by Moyes, planned to sign a new striker, they understood their financial limitations. They couldn't realistically attract a player who was already at the peak of their abilities.
Consequently, upon Barry's arrival on Merseyside, fresh from scoring 11 goals in La Liga, there was an acknowledgment that his development would require time. However, by the season's midpoint, some supporters' patience began to wear thin, as the French forward had only found the net once in 18 Premier League appearances.
Things turned around for Barry in January. He finished his debut campaign strongly, scoring eight goals in 38 Premier League matches. This impressive tally was further highlighted by the fact that half of his goals were scored after Everton's key creator, Jack Grealish, sustained a season-ending injury in January.
Barry's form peaked during the crucial latter stages of the season. In contrast, some of his teammates saw their performance levels decline as they strove to help Everton secure a European spot. By the season's conclusion, Barry's eight goals were achieved from an expected goals (xG) value of 8.1, and his shot conversion rate stood at 21.1%, narrowly trailing Erling Haaland's 21.4%.
