Canada Vows Reciprocal Tariffs Amid Failed Trade Deal Talks with US
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on the US, matching the 50% levies "dollar for dollar." This decision comes after last-minute proposed changes by the US to trade deal terms were deemed "unfair and uneconomic" by Canadian officials, ultimately leading to the failure of negotiations by the Friday midnight deadline.
Carney stated that Canadian officials acted in good faith throughout the process, but the US's eleventh-hour demands undermined the reliability of any potential agreement. The US tariffs are expected to impact approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the breakdown as a "missed opportunity for Canada," asserting that Canada's "new demands and walk backs" disrupted the delicate balance achieved earlier in the week, despite a "forward-looking" US offer that included a "historic economic and national security partnership."
This escalation of trade conflict casts doubt on the future of the North American trade pact involving the US, Canada, and Mexico, which is vital for the industries of all three countries. Donald Trump's import taxes will affect about 5% of annual Canadian exports to the US, covering a range of products.
According to a senior Trump administration official, Canada sought concessions on steel, aluminum, vehicles, and lumber, which the US was unwilling to grant. The political ramifications of this trade dispute are anticipated to be more significant than the economic fallout, given the substantial trade volume between the two nations, which reached $880 billion last year.
While the tariffs were initially set to take effect on Wednesday, Trump extended the deadline for three days to facilitate further discussions. However, no new talks are currently planned.
Carney indicated that his government would soon announce measures to support Canadian workers and businesses, emphasizing that Canada's objective was to secure the best possible agreement, not one at any cost or deadline. This stance received support from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who pledged full backing for a robust, "tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar" response to protect Canadian sovereignty and economic security.
Candace Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, criticized the tariffs as a "body blow to North American competitiveness," warning of increased costs for Americans and potential threats to Canadian customers, investment, and small businesses.
